Benzo Drop-In Support Group

This drop-in support group is offered on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month from 11-12pm at 790 Bay St., Suite 306 and is for patients taking sedative-hypnotic drugs (benzodiazepines & z-drugs) to help sleep and/or to reduce anxiety and want to taper off these drugs.  It is no longer recommended to take sedative-hypnotic drugs to treat insomnia or anxiety.  Research* has shown people >65 years old, who take these drugs are putting themselves at a:

  • 5-fold higher risk of memory and concentration problems
  • 4-fold increased risk of daytime fatigue
  • 2-fold increased risk of falls and fractures
  • 2-fold increased risk of having a motor vehicle accident

The group offers lifestyle changes and other solutions (cognitive behavioural strategies and mindfulness) to deal with stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia.  It is facilitated by a licensed social worker.
